Sawyer Housing Authority reports housing/homeless data

SAWYER HOUSING AUTHORITY /June 2009 Update: SHA has received 49 applications. Of the 49, eight of applicants were either elderly or disabled. Two were single people and the remaining were families. Five of the applicants are homeless, 28 are living with other people, and five are paying over half of their monthly income toward their housing expense. Five also claim that they are living in substandard housing (I would be cautious in using the substandard as many people have varying definitions of substandard housing). Twenty-eight of the 49 are working or have disability income.

The voucher waiting list opened on 5/18/09 and since then we received 19 applications. The other 30 applicants were from 1/1/09. Now that the list is open again, we will have more activity with our data.

If you need anything else, let me know. Thanks. (715) 634-4280 / sheila54843@yahoo.com

"SAVES" Collaboration focus on Hunger/Homeless

Welcome to "SAVES" Sawyer Actions & Voices for Economic Stability -- a web blog to increase community collaboration and communication about family economic issues that impact household and community economic well-being. What do you know or want to know about issues such as housing, homeless, hunger, employment, health etc. that have an affect on Sawyer County individual, family and community economic stability. What is being done in your network of community: faith-based, agency, workplace, recreational, community service groups, etc. to learn about hunger/homeless or to help people in need? What ideas do you have for increasing access to affordable housing and adequate food? Heightening public awareness? Helping people do more with what they have? Please use this blog format to openly dialogue and share about data, situations, needs, programs, resources, events, etc. In response to November 2008, National Homeless Awareness month, a Hunger/Homeless (formerly "ACCESS") task force was formed. This group of concerned agency and community members wants to know the answer to WHAT CAN BE DONE? in Sawyer County to help increase access to sufficient food and adequate housing for a healthy life. Become involved! To learn more about steps to take go to, http://www.EndHungerWI.org. Please use this blog format to openly dialogue and share about data, situations, needs, programs, resources, events, etc. Dialogue here to help join forces to address these real needs. Participate in the SAVES collaboration.

Sawyer County Resource Guide Nancy Mercer/ Sheila Young
Work is being done to complete a simple front-to-back of a County-wide resource guide. Sheila has taken lead on pulling this resource guide together. Also, hunger and public relations committees helped gather civic and service organizations as well as information from local churches. Linda Graham of Beehive Botanicals requested that we have an LCO contact on the brochure. Food Shelf Information distribution requirements as well. Hayward Food Shelf requests identification either SS#/Resident and permanent address or some type of official document. ICAA food shelf – No one turned away

Sue Gardener suggested to include the school because of services to help homeless including food programs as well as help with fees and supplies. Personal Hygiene: Resources for hair care, nail care and clothing. Other resources: Church and support group resources. Also, Winter resources? What is available in that area?

Resource Guide Dissemination Trinke reported that funding may be available through private donation to assist w/ duplication and distribution costs. Area food shelves when supplied with resource information copy will provide Information at food distributions as follows: ICAA Food Shelf: 250 pre printed and if on one side can use for ICAA information. 1st of month; Hayward Food Shelf: 250 Copies of information pre printed as needed for monthly demand.

Resource Guide: Community Service Help / Hayward Alternative School Student (Sara) is available to assist with 30 hours of community service to use toward GEDO graduation requirements. Douglas Baker and Sue Gardener explained that GEDO 2/ Hayward Night School is a regular high school diploma program that requires HSED test/employment/service learning project in less than a year. Sara would have responsibilities to develop and confirm accuracy of Resource Guide information, possible dissemination and outreach methods including posters in LCO transit as well as public areas such as bathroom stall poster areas.
Suggested deadline for completing Resource Guide: May 31, 2009

Lack of Dental Clinic /Services identified as a crisis issue. In Sawyer County,
four year wait to get services. Ashland clinic has a 3-week wait. Ladysmith and Park Falls have clinics with waits of 3 weeks to 3 months. 8-10 Dentists working at a time vs. one dentist in Sawyer County. Paid for through medical card / forward medical benefit card. What could be done to find more dentists (Rural Health) who would serve the Sawyer Community? News article? People to investigate need or to provide increased service? Education to increase understanding of dental health. Also linked to improper nutrition. Head Start also provides rudimentary dental health education.

SHARE program: Mary Ann Seebek reported that 90 families participated in SHARE in March vs. 90+ families in past months and years. SHARE orders are usually about 7th day of month and delivered by end week of following week. Ruth Blank asked about availability of program in the Winter area. Ladysmith as a site M. Seebek distributed Share Times with Share program information. Picked up at Wesleyan Church. Food not picked up is given to a needy family and Mary Ann keeps a list of people in need. 5 Families were assisted in March. SHARE needs help with donations for purchasing food to give to needy people. As well as for help with the management/distribution costs of the program. Mary Ann Seebek 634-3604 or online.

Hunger/Homeless Public Awareness Data Sharing Trinke
Trinke offered to work with agencies to compile hunger/homeless data on a monthly basis to share with others to heighten awareness of these needs. Information could be shared through radio, print media and a blog, Trinke tracks some homeless data through different UWEX educational programs. Possibilities for data to report include:

In regard to hunger/food needs Sue Skinner, ICAA reported demographic characteristics used for routine data collection such as: Seniors, Adults, and Children; How many pounds of food given non t fab food and t fab food; Race, single, type of family, education, income, employment, housing type, homeless; number of new families
Sue Gardener, Hayward Schools reported Total to date 42 and current at 24 – highest number homeless students at one time yet and suggested numbers are under- reported. Possible
data to use:
• % free and reduced food service
• Home many kids universal free breakfast
• # of homeless and active to date
• Self-identified and through adult referral
• Total to date 42 and current at 24 – highest number ever
Sue suggested that this data is under reported . . .

Housing Needs: Sheila Young, Sawyer Housing Authority also tracks a variety
of housing/demographics and is seeking to track information as well on phone inquiries and people turned away due to closed waiting list.

NEXT STEPS: Identify ACTION STEPS for Hunger/Homeless or SAVES: Sawyer Actions and
Voices for Economic Stability:
Summer=Resource Guide; Fall=Homeless Awareness; Winter = ? ; Spring = ? Karen Giese asked about our “plan”.
Trinke encouraged use of the http://www.endhungerWI.org document as a planning guide. Meet needs to be to “take action” to accomplish goals vs. information sharing. Trinke will investigate use of a public “blog” chat room for information sharing.
